PROJECT: Hope Gives Us Wings
LOCATION: Takoma Langley, Maryland
GROUND: concrete sidewalk
SHIFT: This design helps clarify a pedestrian path traveling from an 8-lane road and bus stops to a Capitol Bikeshare station. The vibrant colors help reinforce natural travel patterns with encouraging design inspired by immigrant journeys.
SIZE: 300 square feet
PARTNERS: Takoma Langley Crossroads Development Authority
DESIGN LEAD: Monica Curca
ARTIST STATEMENT: The sidewalk mural titled “Hope Gives Us Wings” illustrated by Takoma Park resident Monica Curca of Activate Labs and brought to life by Chalk Riot in Langley Park traces the rainbow-like journeys of birds from Africa, Latin America, Asia, and North America, all converging on a shared path. Inspired by the rich cultural tapestry of the Langley Park community, it honors the tension between the pull of home and the push to migrate—reflecting the beauty, restlessness, and resilience within us all. In the vibrant flight of color and movement, it offers a wish for safety, belonging, and the possibility of building shared futures right here, together.
